Causes of Upper Back Pain
In most people, the upper spine has a kyphotic curve. This means it has a natural bend toward the back of the body. Conversely, the lower back and neck have lordotic curves, meaning they are naturally bent toward the front of the body. These natural curves help your spine handle the many forces it’s exposed to daily.
Unfortunately, many factors can cause these forces to exceed your spine’s tolerance and lead to tissue damage in the upper back.
Such factors include:
- Repetitive stress from frequent bending, lifting, or twisting
- Acute trauma sustained in such falls, slips, auto accidents, or heavy lifting accidents
- Years of poor posture while sitting, sleeping, or performing functional and job-related activities
These and other factors (including psychological stress and smoking), may increase the risk of conditions that cause upper back pain, stiffness, and related symptoms.
At MCR Chiropractic, the most common upper back pain conditions we diagnose and treat include muscle strains and muscle spasms, ligament sprains, disc herniation, spinal joint inflammation, pinched nerves, and rib dislocation. Upper back pain is also often caused by underlying conditions that you are either born with or predisposed to, including scoliosis, ankylosing spondylitis, and fibromyalgia.

How the MCR Chiropractic Team Treats Upper Back Pain
Every person who walks through our doors with upper back pain can expect a thorough and individualized assessment that will help us identify the root cause of their upper back pain. We use advanced diagnostic techniques to help clarify each diagnosis and identify the underlying factors that contribute to a person’s dysfunction if necessary.
Based on our examination results, we can offer a range of natural and effective services that help heal upper back tissues, restore health and balance to the entire spine, and help patients learn how to avoid recurring issues. Treatments include:
Spinal adjustments
Chiropractors may also use an adjusting tool when there is needed to be less force, or contraindications, to the hands-on adjusting procedure.
Trigger point therapy
The entire concept of trigger point therapy revolves around the fact that waste products build around your nerve clusters and stimulate nerve pain and other nerve-related symptoms.
Myofascial release
Myofascial release offers a drug-free, non-invasive technique for relaxing areas of tightness.
Electrical stimulation
Electrical Muscle Stimulation or E-Stim is a specialized medical treatment that uses electric currents to induce muscle contractio
Stretching and corrective exercises
These exercises can play a vital role in helping you regain control of your body, improve your range of motion, and enjoy a more pain-free lifestyle.
Lifestyle and nutritional advice
Our approach to care involves using an integrated approach to physical wellness, with “whole body” treatment that encourages lifestyle and nutritional changes, meditation and relaxation, physical and mental exercise, and positive reinforcement.
