Causes of Back Pain

There are many potential causes of back pain that we categorize as macro-traumas and micro-traumas. Many patients come to our clinic soon after an injury, including a sports injury or car accident (macro-trauma). Back pain can also be caused by chronic health conditions, poor posture, muscle weakness, and repetitive motion (micro-trauma). Even a minor injury can cause significant pain. Both macro- and micro-traumas can cause spinal misalignment, or spinal subluxation. As a result, you may experience mobility issues, a pinched nerve, muscle inflammation, and other injuries. This spinal misalignment or subluxation can also impair the ability of the spinal nerves to transmit information to and from the brain and the body, resulting in many other health issues.

The role of a chiropractor is to get to the root of the problem. Chiropractors can provide pain relief, but are ultimately concerned about finding the source of the problem, not just the symptoms. That’s why our chiropractor will take a look at your medical history and perform a thorough examination before treatment begins. At MCR Chiropractic, we determine your best plan of care based on your personal goals of treatment, and our objective findings. We will review this in your report of findings appointment.

Chiropractic Adjustments for Back Pain

The main way chiropractors treat back pain is with chiropractic adjustments. Adjustments help keep the body aligned while also improving function and reducing pain. Adjustments are gentle and quick, applying a simple thrust to restore the body’s natural alignment. Your back will also benefit from improved mobility, allowing you to move without pain.

What causes back pain?

Back pain can result from muscle strain, poor posture, joint dysfunction, herniated discs, arthritis, repetitive movements, sports injuries, or everyday wear and tear. In some cases, irritated nerves or conditions such as sciatica may also contribute to symptoms.

Back pain can affect the upper, middle, or lower back and may range from mild discomfort to severe pain that limits daily activities.

Is chiropractic care safe for back pain?

Evidence-based chiropractic care is considered a conservative treatment option for back pain. It is considered safe when performed by an expert, licensed chiropractor. Before beginning treatment, your provider will perform a thorough evaluation to determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition and may refer you for additional medical evaluation if necessary.

Can chiropractic care help with back pain?

Yes. Chiropractic care can help improve spinal mobility, reduce joint restrictions, relieve muscle tension, and support better movement patterns. Many people seek chiropractic care for lower back pain, upper back pain, stiffness, and sciatica-related symptoms.

Can poor posture cause back pain?

Yes, poor posture can cause back pain. Poor posture and prolonged sitting can place excessive stress on muscles and joints, contributing to upper and lower back pain. Chiropractic care, exercise, and ergonomic changes may help improve posture and reduce symptoms.

When should I seek chiropractic care for back pain?

You should schedule an evaluation if back pain:

  • Lasts longer than a few days
  • Returns frequently
  • Limits your daily activities
  • Interfere with sleep, exercise, or work
  • Causes numbness, tingling, or pain that travels into the legs or buttock

Seek immediate attention if back pain follows a significant injury.

What can I expect during chiropractic treatment for back pain?

Your chiropractor will perform a thorough evaluation to identify factors contributing to your symptoms. Your individualized treatment plan may include chiropractic adjustments and manipulations, manual therapy, movement and posture recommendations, stretching and strengthening exercises, and education designed to support recovery and reduce the likelihood of future flare-ups.

Can chiropractic care help prevent future back pain episodes?

Chiropractic care may help reduce the risk of recurring back pain by improving spinal mobility, posture, movement mechanics, and muscle balance. When combined with regular exercise, healthy movement habits, ergonomic strategies, chiropractic treatment can help support long-term spine health and function.

Can chiropractic adjustments help a herniated disc?

Chiropractic care may help some individuals with disc-related pain by improving mobility and reducing stress on affected tissues. Your chiropractor will first conduct a thorough evaluation to determine if chiropractic treatment is suitable for your conditions. Treatment recommendations are based on the severity of symptoms and findings from your examination. Some conditions may require additional medical evaluation.
